Julie VonDerVellen
Artist in Residence
Julie VonDerVellen is a artist, graphic designer, and instructor. Her pieces investigate memory, vulnerability, and significant moments that define, direct, and influence our lives. Paper serves as her primary medium – providing the foundation for crafting commonplace objects. She is inspired by textile design as well as traditional book art techniques. She is motivated by innovative ways to manipulate and engineer the materials. Her process of incorporating sewing and embroidery techniques transforms the functionality of paper into tactile qualities found in fabric. Her work reflects the complexities and emotional connections within ever-evolving human relationships.She received her BS degree in Graphic Design at Edgewood College and her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a lecturer at Carroll University in the Graphic Communications Department. She is actively showing her work nationwide and has been included in exhibitions held at the Cameron Art Museum, Dishman Art Museum, Clarke University, Indiana University, High Point University, Foundry Art Centre, and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
