RedLine Milwaukee’s Teen Residency program serves Milwaukee teens who are committed to further developing their involvement in visual art. Teen Residents receive mentoring from RedLine’s established and emerging artists, collaborate with internationally and locally recognized visiting artists, and lead demonstrations for their peers once a month at Contemporary Teen Nights.
While a great deal of time is devoted to personal portfolio development, the program also asks residents to consider the socio-political role of art in local and global contexts — and how their own practice can provide compelling insights in these arenas. Through engaging with the RedLine community, honing professional skills as they relate to art and social practice, and visiting artist-run spaces throughout Milwaukee, residents explore the lasting effects that an engaged artistic practice can have on community.
We seek to help equip teens with
- a sense of autonomy and integrity in their professional pursuits;
- an ability to trust their own uniqueness, using self-directed projects to pursue their particular interests;
- the kinetic and procedural knowledge necessary to operate a printing press;
- the ability to speak comfortably in front of their peers;
- and the tools they may need to make creative contributions on a local level for the health of their communities.
Applications for the Fall 2015 program are due on Friday, May 8, 2015.
All applicants are invited to attend Contemporary Teen Nights to get a feel for how the program works and to meet the current residents.
