Luke Farley

Artist in Residence

A graduate with honors in Studio Art from Cornell College, Luke Farley is an artist with roots mainly in painting and sculpture. On large format canvases he creates rhythmic compositions by allowing emotional impulses to direct his process driven painting style. Challenging the traditional restraints of Western painting, Farley explores the crisis of representation as a mode of art making. Painting both non-objective images and abstracted memories, Luke finds clarity by using a limited color palate and multiple mark making techniques. Many times, Farley’s paintings seemed unfinished in an attempt to leave the viewer with an understanding of the process, giving glimpses into each movement, mark, and moment the painter undergoes while seeking a conclusion.

Detouring from painting, sculpture allows Luke Farley to step away and indulge himself in a variety of techniques mostly focusing around the found object. These sculptures require a process focused on the individual action, apposed to the continuous mark making found within his paintings. This providing a further narrative into the constant practice of art making.
