Set in the vibrant Cuban landscape, Edicones Vigía: Poeticas visual documents the production behind the making of Ediciones Vigía artist books featured in the exhibition, Experiencing Cuba: Artist Books of Ediciones Vigía and Photographs by Joseph Mougel, on view at RedLine Milwaukee through December 20, 2014. Ediciones Vigía was founded in 1985 as a place for local artist and writers to escape the political climate of Cuba through a creative community. The collective evolved from a press to a publishing house that began to create handmade book from found and donated materials.
This film by Juanamaría Cordones-Cook details the evolution of the of Ediciones Vigía through interviews with Vigía craftsmen and women, and Cuban intellectuals who have been involved with the press since its beginning. Cordones-Cook is an award winning film maker who has created 7 hours and 30 minutes of documentary over 27 years on recorded Ediciones Vigia, including three other documentaries on top of Poeticas visual. Vigia: Entre la plalabra y la imagen / Between the Word and the Image, another film in this series, will be screened at RedLine Milwaukee on Thursday, December 11, 6-8pm.
