New Workshop Series: In the Artist’s Studio

This new workshop series connects RedLine Resident Artists and the community for a studio visit, demonstration on a process that the artist uses, and an exercise.

Next workshop: May 10, 12-3 with RedLine resident artist  Nina Ghanbarzadeh

Resident artist Nina Ghanbarzadeh’s water-based and mixed media workshop will explore different techniques in creating text-based art. This experimental workshop will place focus on both technique and content. Participants will be challenged to use text not only as a decorative element, but also as a purposeful and compelling tool.  Some of the strategies used will be collage, transfer, stenciling, stamping and layering.

There will be ample materials on hand, but participants are encouraged to bring their own favorite pictures, magazines or newspaper cutouts. Materials for the transfer technique will be laser printed only.

About the Artist

Nina Ghanbarzadeh was born and raised in Tehran, Iran. She spent four years in India from 1984 to 1988, where she got her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Pune University. After returning to Iran in 1989, she realized that her passion was not in chemistry. She started taking art classes and painted for ten years. During this time she did several free lance translations and tutored children at elementary schools. Upon immigrating to the United States in 2001, she returned to school and received her BFA in Fine Arts and Graphic Design from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2013.

Ghanbarzadeh’s paintings (shown above are Jian, people’s car and Self Portrait, respectively) are depictions of her culture and background. She is not only trying to portrait the unfamiliar subjects from Iran to Western viewers, but keep her memories alive and fresh at the same time. Bits and pieces from historical sites, advertisements, and people are present in her work. She juxtaposes subjects that do not belong to the same time period in the history of Iran. She creates humor and wants the viewer to think about how these elements could have any connection to each other. She currently lives and works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her husband and daughter.
