Artists in Residence
There will be approximately 12-14 artists at any given time who will remain “in residence” for a two or three year period. A primary goal of RedLine Milwaukee is the inclusion and interactivity of cross fertilizing ideas among art, science, dance, storytelling and criticism. In addition to affordable studio space, the artists will receive mentoring from three to four accomplished artists per year who may be “in residence” or may be guests of RedLine on a more intermittent basis. Interactivity is a core element at RedLine: artists will engage in healthy art criticism and vibrant debate as they grow together as artists and in the community. The artists will have the ability to participate in various educational forums, which will allow them to learn new techniques and to hone their existing skills. Resident Artists will be chosen by a committee and will sign an agreement detailing their residency responsibilities. Participation in the Artists in Residence Program will be determined by an equitable selection process.
Exhibition Program
It is the mission of RedLine Milwaukee's Exhibition Program to bring socially relevant exhibitions to the Milwaukee community with a focus on serving a broader audience than is generally considered. This mission helps us attain our three primary goals: access, social consciousness and professional development. RedLine Milwaukee is a venue for showcasing local talent as well as national and international work. Our Education Programs are intrinsically linked to the exhibition content, in that the exhibitions provide the foundation of our education curriculums. All artists must be invited to propose for, and participate in, RedLine Milwaukee exhibitions.
Education Program
RedLine Milwaukee's biggest educational goal is to provide teen outreach programming in the Milwaukee area. Through mentoring programs, work programs, and residencies, we will be filling a great need in the community. Steve Vande Zande, for the past 12 years has been a program creator of teen outreach, developing and implementing programs at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Steve and Lori have taught these programs together for the past seven years. Their dream is to strengthen the community by offering teens a safe place to learn, emote and collaborate as people with promise. An integral part of RedLine's mission will be to provide workshops, lectures, seminars and other activities that will strengthen cultural appreciation and understanding in the Milwaukee community. The library will provide a space for artists and guests to enhance their knowledge of art. High school and college students who are interested in art will be encouraged to volunteer so they may interact with Resident Artists in a meaningful and productive way.
Print Shop Program
RedLine's in house print shop is dedicated to offering Milwaukee a traditional printmaking facility, fully equipped for intaglio, callograph, relief, monoprint, silkscreen and photo lithography, and educational support for a diverse audience. Fostering a better understanding of these traditional yet highly experimental printmaking processes, the print shop will be RedLine's catalyst and venue for artists to cross the line that separates their individual disciplines.
Four of RedLine's resident art studios will be devoted specifically to printmakers. Open studio access times will be designated for artists and interested community members to use the facilities and equipment. Additional printmaking studio time will be dedicated to teens and school programs and the general community to ensure people throughout the Milwaukee community have access to this rich media that through the years has remained a primary vehicle for the artist to give voice to contemporary culture. The print shop will be run by local printmakers and teaching artists Kari Couture and Kim Weiss.
